Dear Neighbor,
Illegal immigration continues to be the number one public safety issue our nation is facing. President Obama's executive amnesty has been halted by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals but the Obama Administration is appealing the decision and taking the case to the Supreme Court. The outcome in United States vs. Texas can have lasting consequences on our country. Last week, I joined my colleagues in taking action against President Obama's overreaching executive actions and sent a strong message that we should not grant amnesty to illegal immigrants.
In November 2014, President Obama announced he would take executive action to prevent the deportation of millions of illegal aliens. Texas and twenty-five other states joined together to fight against this executive overreach in the court system. The case is now headed to the Supreme Court in April and last week, the House stood with Texas to oppose the President's executive amnesty.
On Thursday, the House voted to authorize the Speaker to file an amicus brief opposing the Administration's position on executive amnesty and in support of Texas in United States v. Texas. This is the first time in history an amicus brief has been filed on behalf of the House - showing just how firmly Republicans in Congress stand against the President’s executive action to give millions of illegal aliens amnesty.
In addition to the recent vote, the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Appropriations held a hearing with the Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, (ICE) Sarah Saldaña. I questioned her on the status of sanctuary policies in our nation’s largest cities. Director Saldaña explained that sixteen of the twenty-five largest cities in the country are cooperating with federal immigration agents- nine are not. I made it abundantly clear that I am prepared to cut federal funding for those that are not following federal law. Watch that hearing here:
The Supreme Court's decision will have long lasting effects but I will continue to make sure our hard-earned tax dollars don't end up in the hands of sanctuary cities. In fact, the Federation for American Immigration Reform recently sent a letter of support for my actions to combat sanctuary cities through the appropriations process.
It is an honor and a privilege to represent you and Texas in the United States Congress.
Sincerely,
John Culberson
