Washington, D.C. –  Congressman John Culberson (TX-07), a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, released the following statement on the 2018 Farm Bill.

“The Farm Bill is important to America’s hardworking farmers and ranchers, and ensures that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families, continues helping those who need it most.

“One of the principal reasons I supported this Farm Bill is because it will help people become self-sufficient. With our soaring economy and unemployment at an 18-year low, there’s never been a better time to get folks off the sidelines and into meaningful work.

“This bill ensures that the basic needs of Americans – food, health care, and housing – are met. It will help adults that are fit to work – NOT seniors, NOT individuals with disabilities, and NOT children – regain a sense of pride that comes with the hard work and respect of having a job.

“I’m proud to support this bill, and I urge my Senate colleagues to do the same.”

The Farm Bill:

  • Reauthorizes and strengthens Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage programs, maintains crop insurance.
  • Streamlines existing work requirements for able-bodied SNAP recipients and pairs them with a variety of options to increase SNAP recipients’ opportunities.
  • Provides a safety net for farmers who are affected by unfair foreign trading practices.
  • Reforms key conservation programs, expands access to working land programs.
  • Authorizes substantial funding for the expansion of rural broadband.
  • Establishes new programs to protect the health of the nation’s livestock.
  • Improves assistance for specialty crops and reduces fraud in organic imports.
  • Helps new farmers and ranchers establish themselves in agriculture.
