Washington, D.C. – This week, Representative John Culberson (TX-07) offered an amendment to the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to preserve our nation’s historic battleships. The amendment was adopted by voice vote and creates a competitive grant program within the Department of Interior to maintain battleships like the USS Texas. The grant program would require grantees to provide one-for-one matching of any federal funding received.
“Historic battleships are national treasures that tell the stories of the courageous servicemen that walked their decks and fought for our nation. Many of our country’s battleships are in desperate need of repair, including the Battleship Texas, which is docked along the Houston Ship Channel. Because of leaks, the Battleship Texas has been closed to the public many times over the years. We must maintain this important ship to honor those who fought to protect our shores and to educate the next generation of Texans.
“If enacted into law, this amendment would ensure that the Battleship Texas and our nation’s other floating memorials are preserved.”
