Washington, D.C. — Congressman John Culberson (TX-07) released the following response to President Obama’s State of the Union address:

“On January 8, 1790, President George Washington delivered the first State of the Union address. In the 226 years since his address, the American Republic that the Founders left us has largely disappeared. There is very little left in our personal lives or in the realm of original State authority that the federal government does not control, despite the fact that the Founders designed the Constitution to protect our liberty by strictly limiting the power of the federal government and protecting the broad authority of State governments.

“Tonight we heard more of the same from President Obama—calls for more spending and for more executive actions. More intrusion from the federal government is not what we need.

“Once again, we heard the President pledge that he will work to shut down the prison at the United States Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. My colleagues and I in the House have repeatedly prohibited the Administration from moving these dangerous detainees into the U.S., and I will continue to block the President’s misguided plan to close Guantanamo Bay and move detainees into the United States.

“Texans are tired of the President’s lawlessness, detachment, and disregard for our Constitution. I intend to continue using the appropriations process to rein in this out-of-control administration and put a stop to their destructive policies. My goal is to ensure that Americans’ hard-earned tax dollars are not used to implement illegal and unconstitutional executive orders.”
