“I place economy among the first and most important of republican virtues, public debt as the greatest of dangers to be feared.” ~Thomas Jefferson

A balanced budget continues to be one of my highest long-term priorities. I believe the government should be forced to balance its checkbook just like all American families do. We most often hear about the over $21 trillion national debt that grows with each passing day.  While this figure is frightening, it is only the tip of the iceberg of our country’s financial standing.  As it stands right now, the liabilities of our entire federal government are more than $120 trillion.

To provide our children with the same limitless opportunities we have enjoyed, we must drastically alter the direction of our federal government.  We must shrink both the size and scope of our government.

Most government programs can be handled by the private sector and provide much better services at a reduced cost to the taxpayer. Privatizing entire sectors of the federal government will reduce the power of the federal government and will give Americans more control over their personal choices and financial futures.

The first bill I co-authored this Congress was a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution. On April 12, 2018, the House voted on this legislation, and I was proud to support it. However, the resolution did not receive the two-thirds support required to amend the Constitution.

As a staunch constitutional conservative, I have consistently voted to reduce the size and scope of the federal government, and I will always fight to ensure that the American people remain in control of our nation, not Washington bureaucrats.
