My office is always looking for college students who are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program and have an interest in government and public policy. Interns must have completed at least one year of undergraduate study, and must possess strong oral and written communication skills. Internships are available during the fall or spring semesters and during the summer. Interns will also be eligible to earn course credit. Internships are available in both my Houston and Washington, DC offices.

By assisting the Congressman’s district staff, interns have the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge about how a Congressional office provides constituent services and interacts with the community.

While interning in Washington, students will have a variety of responsibilities including researching legislation, responding to inquiries from constituents, assisting with special projects, and performing administrative duties such as answering phones and opening mail. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend Congressional hearings and markups, participate in courses offered by the Library of Congress, attend lectures by leading political figures, and take special tours of Washington’s historic landmarks.

Internships are unpaid, and students are responsible for travel to and from Washington, housing, and arrangements to receive academic credits. My office will work with the school and the student to tailor the intern program to meet the student’s academic requirements. Interns are expected to work full-time; however, if you are taking classes, we may be able to accommodate your schedule.

To apply for an internship, students should email the following information to David Bruton in my Washington, D.C. office at If you have any questions, please contact my Washington office at 202-225-2571 or my Houston office at 713-682-8828.
