Last night, after failing to pass a budget and refusing to take action on looming tax hikes, the Democrats decided it was time to get out of town. They’ll return for a lame duck session in November to vote on these things, showing how unaccountable they are to the American people. Their failure to address these issues is a disgraceful dereliction of duty.
If there were one bright spot, however, it’s the action Congress took last night to save NASA’s human spaceflight program and preserve America’s leadership role in space. In a bipartisan rebuke of the President Obama’s proposal, Congress authorized the immediate development of a new, heavy-lift space craft that will take astronauts to previously unexplored regions of deep space. NASA is an invaluable asset to our country. It represents some of America’s strongest ideals, and it keeps us at the forefront of exploration and innovation. This bill insures that Houston remains synonymous with human spaceflight and that America remains on the leading edge of science and technology.
