Representative John Culberson (TX-07) released the following statement after the House announced that the “American Health Care Act” (AHCA), H.R. 1628 would not receive a vote.

There is no doubt that this was a missed opportunity to reform our country’s health care system. This was our first chance to repeal and replace the worst parts of Obamacare and ensure relief to millions of Americans who are suffering under this burdensome law. The AHCA was our attempt to deliver on our promise to lower costs, enhance quality of care and provide real choices to consumers.

“Our nation is at a tipping point. The United States is $19.9 trillion in debt and programs like Medicare and Social Security are headed toward bankruptcy. The Affordable Care Act only adds to this strain by subsidizing, partially or completely, health care for 25 million Americans. We are on an unsustainable path and change is necessary.

“This bill was designed to put Americans in charge of their own health insurance and put states in charge of regulating and designing health insurance markets that work best in that state. Every American should have access to affordable health insurance.

“I am grateful to all of my constituents who contacted my office to share their opinions. I look forward to seeing them at my town hall meeting tomorrow.”
