Representative John Culberson (TX-07) and Representative Robert Aderholt (AL-04) introduced a resolution to name the first launch of the Space Launch System (SLS) the Cernan 1 rocket in honor of Captain Gene Cernan, the last astronaut to leave footprints on the moon.

“Captain Cernan was devoted to making America’s space program the best in the world,” Representative Culberson said. “He was a dear friend and I cannot think of a more fitting way to honor his legacy than the first launch of the Space Launch System carrying Captain Cernan’s name.

The Space Launch System represents an opportunity to forge forward with Captain Cernan’s vision to push the boundaries of human space exploration. I’m proud to introduce this resolution to ensure that Captain Cernan’s role in making America’s space program the best in the world is never forgotten.”
