Congressman Culberson helped to direct funding to the following projects in Fiscal Year 2008:

  • $4 million for the Alliance for NanoHealth to develop medical research based on nanotechnology to support our soldiers in the field.
  • $763,500 for the Alliance for NanoHealth for shared electron microscopy equipment (high-resolution CCD camera, cryo-specimen holder, freezing apparatus), for training, and for upgrades for shared equipment purchases.
  • $633,000 for the Alliance for NanoHealth for the upgrade of shared BSL3 laboratory and equipment.
  • $493,521 for the Children’s Nutrition Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine for research investigating pediatric obesity prevention.
  • $735,000 for the City of Houston for reconstruction of a segment of Long Point Road between Pech Road and Hollister Road to support long range plans for mobility upgrades within the Long Point corridor.
  • $3 million for the Civil War Battlefield Preservation Trust for grants for Civil War Battlefield Preservation Program.
  • $3.75 million for the Gulf Intracoastal Canal Association for replacement of the Galveston Causeway Railroad Bridge, a vital transportation link for industries along the Gulf Coast Intercostal Waterway and the Texas Gulf Coast.
  • $13,453 for the Harris County Flood Control District to continue critical detention excavation and channel construction along Brays Bayou in an expedited manner.
  • $98,000 for the Harris County Flood Control District to continue the feasibility study for flood mitigation of the White Oak stem of Buffalo Bayou.
  • $1 million for the Harris County Flood Control District for acquisition, demolition, and relocation of property for disaster mitigation.
  • $243,000 for the Harris County Hospital District for 16 cardiac monitors with a centralized monitoring unit, allowing LBJ Hospital to meet the current demands for a higher level of care.
  • $2,232,500 for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for an Integrated In-Car Video Camera Project, acquiring digital in-car video cameras and license plate recognition technology to integrate with the existing mobile data computers.
  • $19.6 million for Houston METRO to begin implantation of the rail components for the North Corridor and Southeast Corridor for METRO Solutions Phase 2 New Starts.
  • $392,000 for Houston METRO to continue expansion of the Park & Ride system throughout the Houston area and to purchase replacement buses.
  • $294,000 for the Houston Zoo for the development of an educational broadcast program to provide interactive distance learning to the Texas Medical Center.
  • $195,000 for the Memorial Hermann Health System for construction and equipment for a neighborhood healthcare center.
  • $195,000 for The Institute for Research and Rehabilitation for the purchase of urodynamics equipment and microbiology/laboratory software.
  • $365,000 for the Methodist Hospital for purchase of a mass spectrometer for cancer and health research.
  • $1.6 million for Rice University to develop quantum wires to improve the engineering performance of future Air Force platforms.
  • $365,000 to Rice University for the Collaborative Research Center for construction and equipment, allowing researchers and physicians at the Texas Medical Center to team up in collaborative efforts to find path-breaking solutions to today’s healthcare issues.
  • $60 million for Operation Stonegarden to be used for overtime, vehicle maintenance, vehicle and equipment rental costs, reimbursement for mileage, fuel costs, equipment replacement costs, and travel costs for law enforcement entities assisting other local jurisdictions in law enforcement activities.
  • $1,474,605 for Texas A&M University Agricultural Experiment Station for the Designing Foods for Health Program to identify plant “phytochemicals” that prevent disease and enhance those compounds in fruit, vegetables, and other food plants that promote human health.
  • $4.982 million for the Texas Border Sheriffs Coalition to enable the sheriffs to along the Texas -Mexico border to pay overtime and purchase equipment.
  • $300 million for safe drinking water and sanitation projects, to ensure that U.S. aid is effectively targeted at saving lives.
