First Class Tickets for Terrorists
Today President Obama announced that more than 70 detainees from Guantanamo Bay will be moved and housed indefinitely in Thomson, Illinois. The Obama Administration has yet to explain how transferring these terrorists to American soil will make our country safer. While the president may see a change in venue as a way to win approval overseas, I see it as a first class ticket to the United States for terrorists who seek to harm Americans.
Terrorists who kill innocent people and do not abide by international law should not be housed on U.S. soil and granted the same rights as American citizens. President Obama and House Democrats support the idea of bringing terrorists onto U.S. soil as a way to honor the Constitution. Bringing terrorists to the U.S. and affording them constitutional protections does just the opposite – it weakens our judicial system and undermines our Constitution.
The real question should be why these people were ever housed anywhere other than United States soil. The Muslim world questions the legitimacy of American action and, in my opinion, this is causing great harm to the reputation of our great nation. We are a nation of laws. I do not see how housing these people on American soil harms any trial or the security of our nation. Do you really believe our nation is so weak we must bend to the will of a bunch of criminal thugs?
What is the big deal for God Sake !!! Are you arguing with the President just for the sake of arguing?? Bringing them here to the US will show the whole world that we are a country of laws and principals. What is the big deal of bringing them here??
Setting the precedent that international terrorists who commit violent acts against the US–on American soil–will be granted civilian court proceedings is horrifying. It also muddies the water for our servicemen in Iraq/Afghanistan when they capture enemy combatants on the field of battle.
Should they Mirandize them? If they don’t, will they be subjected to reprimand or punishment? Imagine the ridiculous scenario of a foreign terrorist captured by a US Marine. This terrorist, after being handcuffed, begins to verbally abuse his detainers with shouts of “you can’t touch me! I know my rights,man!”
