For the last three years, the U.N. General Assembly has been drafting a treaty that establishes standards for the import, export, and transfer of conventional arms. On Wednesday, Secretary of State John Kerry signed this flawed treaty that tramples on our Second Amendment rights. It is unacceptable that the treaty could limit and ultimately eliminate our fundamental right to keep and bear arms.
Our Constitutional right to keep and bear arms is straightforward and absolute. I have signed on to every piece of legislation opposing the UN Arms Trade Treaty and have joined my conservative colleagues in urging Secretary Kerry and President Obama not to undermine the sovereignty of the United States by signing this treaty. Additionally, I have introduced an amendment to the Constitution that would prohibit a federal judge from using international law as a basis to his ruling. An amendment like this would prevent a UN treaty from becoming American law.
These are important steps, but I am confident that my conservative colleagues in the Senate will vote against the ratification of this treaty.
