Congressman Culberson: Speaker Boehner, Attach Full Repeal of Obamacare to Debt Ceiling Vote

Posted by Scott Gosnell in In The News

Washington, DC – Congressman John Culberson (R-TX) sent the following letter to House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor urging them attach a full repeal of Obamacare to the debt ceiling increase legislation. A PDF of the letter can be found by clicking here.

Dear Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Cantor:

I appreciate your focus on creating jobs and putting America back on track towards a balanced budget, and your leadership in repealing and defunding Obamacare.  I am writing today to recommend a powerful legislative vehicle to achieve this vitally important goal.

I urge you to attach a full repeal of Obamacare to the debt ceiling increase legislation.  No other amendments or legislation should be attached to the debt ceiling bill so that the Senate and the President can be confronted with a stark, simple and profound choice: Pass the bill, save America from default and repeal Obamacare, or protect Obamacare at the price of defaulting on our national debt.

Repealing Obamacare is at the top of the list for the Americans who overwhelmingly supported our new Constitutional conservative majority, and although one of the first bills we passed was a complete repeal of Obamacare, H.R. 2, the Senate will never bring it up for a vote and the President will not sign it. They can also ignore, amend or veto our spending bills, which defund Obamacare.

As a fiscal conservative, I strenuously oppose increasing the debt burden owed by our children and grandchildren, but if it must be done to avoid default, let us achieve our highest legislative priority as a new majority in the process by attaching a clean simple repeal of Obamacare.

If the Senate removes our repeal, we should restore it and send it back.  The principled position of the House must be to use the most powerful legislative leverage at our disposal to repeal Obamacare. In the meantime, I also urge you to hold a vote every week for legislation to repeal or defund Obamacare.  The Americans who hired us to preserve our liberty and prosperity expect no less.

Thank you for your principled leadership of the House of Representatives.

Sincerely,

John Culberson
