European Bailouts at Our Expense

Last Sunday, the International Monetary Fund formally approved $40 billion in loans to help prevent Greece from defaulting on its massive debt. US taxpayers are the IMF’s largest contributors, and we now bear the risk if Greece defaults on the IMF loans. More troubling, Greece may not be the only debt-ridden nation asking for a bailout in the near future. Several EU nations, countries that joined together to challenge America’s economic dominance, may soon be in a similar situation.
$145 Billion and Counting

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac’s blank check from the Treasury Department poses a huge risk to the American taxpayer. Just this week, Fannie and Freddie asked for an additional $8.4 billion and $10.6 billion in federal aid after posting massive losses. This brings total taxpayer assistance to $145 billion. Both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have acknowledged that further losses are imminent, and the Congressional Budget Office estimates that Fannie and Freddie ultimately will cost taxpayers $389 billion.
